Call for Application: GRC Workshop “Digital Transformations of Democracy” (6–9 November 2019).

Dear colleagues,

We would like to invite you to apply to the workshop “Digital Transformations of Democracy”, which is funded by UZH’s Graduate Campus and the Digital Society Initiative at the University of Zurich. The digital transformation changes both the way how democracy works and the way how we research democracy from a scientific perspective. New methods and tools broaden the possibilities for social scientists to investigate central aspects of democracy. In the computational social sciences, working with big data and new forms of data such as political texts have therefore risen in relevance. During the workshop we will discuss new developments in research on election campaigns and digital political communication in Switzerland and abroad. The workshop will connect PhD students and Postdocs of the UZH with experts who focus on new methodologies and the digital transformation of democracy. Moreover, the new data sources currently collected at the Digital Democracy Lab will be presented, and opportunities for using that data in collaboration with the Lab will be discussed. PhD researchers and postdocs should submit an abstract of a research paper which will be presented and discussed during the workshop. We also invited four experts in the field who will give keynote speeches.

The workshop is scheduled from November 6–9 2019 (Wednesday to Saturday) in the Villa Garbald (, located in Castasegna, Graubünden. Costs for accommodation and food will be covered for all participants through financial support by a Graduate Campus Grant and the UZH’s Digital Society Initiative. Participants will only need to book public transport from Zurich to Castasegna (close to the Italian border) and back.

Applications and abstracts can be submitted here until August 31st 2019: Form
